​Do I qualify for the scholarship?

The student must be attending a college, university, or trade school.
Qualifications....
1. The applicant is a resident or was a resident of Leelanau County, Michigan or is married to the resident is eligible to apply.
or
2. The applicant has a direct bloodline, (lineal), such as parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, that is a resident or past resident of Leelanau County, Michigan and/or is married to same, is eligible to apply.

​If you meet the application criteria, please fill out the 2025 request for scholarship application form to receive a link for the application.  Previous winners are eligible.  All communication to the student, will be sent via email.

How does the selection process work?

Once you have completed the application and attached all necessary paperwork, 2-3 pages, you then mail it to the selection committee prior to the deadline.  (Applications must be postmarked by the 15th of April or they will be declined.)

The selection committee (either the Cedar Chamber of Commerce or the Cedar/Maple City Lion's Club) will then select the recipients based on your SAI number, from the 2025-26 FAFSA Submission Summary from your FAFSA.

To meet the present guidelines as issued by the IRS, the Ed and Irene Fleis Education Fund has no input as to who is selected to receive the scholarship awards.

Reasons for application to be declined:

• Unsigned
• Signed but not by applicant
• Incomplete applications
• Missing forms
• SAI on application not matching FAFSA Submission Summary report
• Applications are postmarked after deadline.
• Mailing or emailing application to incorrect address.
• Incorrect year of FAFSA Summary Report

Where do I sent the completed application?

The mailing address of where to send the application is on the application.
Please remember that the applications postmarked after April 15th are declined.

Why do i need to fill out a fafsa form?

Since this is a financial need-based scholarship, it is a requirement of the Education Fund's IRS approval as a charity.  All that is needed for the application are the pages of your FAFSA Submission Summary report with your name and SAI number. Do not send all of your FAFSA information.

​When will I find out if i am a scholarship recipient?

The President of the Ed and Irene Fleis Education Foundation, Inc.  will contact you once the selected students have been announced by phone, email or letter. If you have not been awarded a scholarship you will receive a letter in the mail.  Remember, you may reapply every year that you are in school (even if you have won a previous year.) 

If i am a scholarship recipient, how is it paid?

Checks are made payable to and mailed directly to the educational institution once verification has occurred.  You will receive a copy of the letter we send to the cashier's office.
